Did you know our skin starts to age and show wrinkles as early as our mid-20s?
Aging affects every layer of the skin, from the surface to deeper layers, primarily due to the gradual loss of collagen and elastin fibers. After age 25, these essential skin proteins decrease by about 1% each year!
Collagen and elastin give our skin strength, plumpness, firmness, and elasticity. As their production slows down, we start to notice fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, and loss of volume.
What Causes Wrinkles
Wrinkles are influenced by both internal and external factors and affect us from the moment we are born. Understanding these factors helps us care for our skin effectively and in many ways we actually have some control over the wrinkles that our skin will show over time.
Internal Factors
Internal factors like genetics, hormonal changes, and metabolic shifts we do not have much control over but they play a significant role in the wrinkles that develop on our skin.
For instance, our genetic makeup determines how our body functions and repairs itself. Some people may inherit genes that help maintain youthful skin for longer, while others may have genes that make them age faster. The same can be said about our metabolism, which affects how quickly our body ages. A slower metabolic rate may lead to slower cell regeneration, while a faster rate might help maintain youthful cell functions for longer.
How often have you seen someone that looks 10 years younger than their real age? Or even 10 years older? I am sure you have!
All this being said there is another internal factor that can cause wrinkles over time - slower cell turnover. If you have slow cell turnover this means your cells take longer to regenerate, which can lead to dryness, roughness, and dullness much more than someone who regenerates cells at a faster rate. With slower regeneration, thinner skin becomes more prone to damage and loses hydration more quickly, making it more sensitive and thus, having more wrinkles develop.
External Factors
External factors (phew!) are now what we can control and play a large part in the wrinkles we develop over time.
Sun exposure, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, pollution, and poor lifestyle choices can and will increase wrinkling. UV radiation is another major contributor, causing pigmentation changes, deep line wrinkles, and even skin cancers if we’re unlucky.
Despite all this, we are all human and from time to time will expose ourselves to prolonged sun periods or make poor decisions when it comes to our physical health.
Signs of Skin Wrinkling
Around age 25, you surely notice the first signs of aging on your skin and a wrinkle on the sides of your eyes or on your forehead. At this time, it’s a good opportunity to pay attention more closely to your skincare routine, but even if you haven’t you can start to take steps to care for your skin and embrace your aging gracefully!
The following signs of skin wrinkling happen as we start to age including:
- Wrinkles and Fine Lines: Various types of wrinkles appear due to decreased collagen and elastin.
- Sagging Skin and Loss of Contour: Loss of elasticity leads to sagging around the jawline, mouth, and eyes.
- Dull Skin, Pigmentation and Lost Radiance: Dehydration and oxidative stress can make the skin look dull.
All this and more can really take a toll on our mental health if we allow it but it is at the end of the day a part of life that we all must accept.
Here at Rumi Cosmetiques we’d like you to view your wrinkles as a testament to the experiences and wisdom you've gained over the years. You have lived a life well-lived with experiences and stories to share with those around you! Why not take the time to celebrate that?
Embracing our wrinkles is recognizing that beauty is not just about smooth perfect skin; it's about confidence, character, and inner radiance.
We ask that as you take a look in the mirror today and shift your mindset about wrinkles - let go of any previous misconceptions and feelings of inadequacy or looking old.
YOU are worth it and beautiful - wrinkles and all!
Here are 5 ways that you can embrace your wrinkles with love each and every day moving forward!
Practice Self-Acceptance
Cultivate a loving and accepting attitude towards yourself. Focus on the qualities you love about yourself rather than the flaws. If it helps, use positive affirmations to reinforce self-acceptance and diminish negative self-talk. Remind yourself daily of your worth and beauty!
Adopt and Continue Healthy Lifestyle Choices
When it comes to your skin, use products that make your skin feel good and radiant! Avoid processed foods, too much sugar, drink plenty of water and stick to a balanced diet filled with fruit and veggies! Of course, treat yourself to that chocolate cake once in a while, you deserve it at your age!
Stay Active - Both Physically and Mentally
Regular exercise at least every other day will boost your mood, energy levels, and overall well-being, enhancing your natural glow! Something as simple as a brisk walk or lifting light weights can keep you in good shape and your muscles in optimal shape. And besides staying active physically, treat your brain to occasional crossword puzzles to keep your mind engaged. Continue learning, laugh and explore new interests!
Embrace Style and Self-Expression
As we get older it is important to express ourselves in a way that makes us feel confident and stylish in our own skin. When it comes to clothing, choose colors and styles that flatter your personality. When it comes to makeup, use it to highlight your best features WITHOUT hiding your wrinkles.
Connect and Share with Others
It’s important to always strive to surround yourself with positive, supportive people who appreciate you for who you are. Share your experiences and wisdom with others, fostering a sense of community and belonging. You can even use your experiences to mentor younger women, emphasizing the value of self-acceptance and inner beauty and instilling confidence in them as they get older. You will feel immense satisfaction from these types of acts and build your self-confidence even more!
Remember - embracing wrinkles as an older woman is more than skincare; it's about loving and valuing yourself for who you are.
By shifting your perspective, practicing self-acceptance, and focusing on a healthy lifestyle, you can celebrate your beauty and wisdom and be comfortable in your own skin.
