3 Makeup Tips For Droopy Eyelids & Hooded Eyes
By Carol Ross | Cosmetologist, Author & Publisher
There are many problems that come with ageing.
But nothing bothers us more than our drooping eyelids & hooded eyes.
Here are 3 makeup tips that will significantly reduce the appearance of sagging eyelids & make you look younger.
As we get older, our eyes can become hooded, where the skin of our brow becomes heavy and droops over our eyelids, covering our eyelids partially, or in some cases fully.
Just look at the picture below. This side-by-side comparison of a woman at 17 and then again at 50 shows what happens in painful detail.
Same thing happened to me. A few years ago, I looked in the mirror and realised I had droopy eyelids.
It somehow hit me. So I picked up my phone and looked at some of my 2-3 year old pictures.
The difference in my look was terrifying!
Even if just 2 years had passed, I looked more tired & it seemed I had aged 7 years.
What to do? Well, for starters, I needed to learn more about my droopy eyelids and understand what could I do about them.
To start off, I knew that doing surgery was not an option for me. I do admit that I was afraid of it as something easily could go wrong.
So I was researching various other methods like eye creams & makeup that could reduce the appearance of my droopy eyelids.
You see, the routine I’ve developed over the years wasn’t working any longer. The makeup products I used didn't seem to help a bit. Not to speak about the extreme eye sensitivity.
Looking back, I probably spent hundreds of hours reading blogs and watching YouTube videos about droopy eyelids & hooded eyes. It actually seemed that there was too much content about it.
At first, I felt overwhelmed. But after some time I noticed some makeup tips & tricks that worked. It all started to make sense.
Here are the 3 most important makeup tips that significantly reduce the appearance of droopy eyelids & make you look younger.
Tip #1: It's all about opening your eyes as much as possible
The thing is that droopy eyelids make our eyes less visible. We look more tired, sleep & fatigued.
With makeup and our look in general, we need to combat this.
In other words, we need to open our eyes as much as possible.
And the best way to do this is to focus on our eyelashes.
There's nothing that open our eyes as much as having long & thick eyelashes.
Which brings to our second makeup tip:
Tip #2: Hide your droopy eyelids behind your eyelashes
Look at this before/after picture.
Do you see how big of a role your eyelashes play in reducing the appearance of droopy eyelids?
So our goal is to do everything we can to get our eyelashes as long & thick as possible.
Yes, I know what you're thinking as I had the same problem:
As we get older, our eyelashes are not as lush as they used to be.
They get thinner and start to grow slower. This happens due to a drop in estrogen & progesterone levels as we age.
But it's not as cloudy & hopeless as it appears to be.
There is a way to have beautiful & gorgeous lashes even after 50!
This brings us to the third and last tip:
Tip #3: After 50, you can't just rely on makeup products
REALITY CHECK: You can't make non-existent eyelashes look great with just mascara.
And the reason for that is simple yet most women over 50 are unaware of it.
You see, our eyelashes are more demanding now than they were in our 20s & 30s.
Our eyes are more sensitive and eyelashes are getting thinner & thinner.
The truth is that our body can’t grow and sustain thick and long eyelashes by itself anymore – it needs all the help it can get.
You can't rely on the same mascara that works for 24-year-old's eyelashes.
In reality, you need products that are curated for your needs.
Not only you need a mascara specifically designed for mature eyelashes but also you need to start incorporating an eyelash enhancing serum into your beauty routine.
Yes, it might be more pricey. But we're talking about looking the best we can.
And to be honest with you, I'm not willing to save money on my looks.
What products I use to have long & thick eyelashes after 50?
So after realising I want to stop spending money on eyelash products that don't work for me, I (again) went on a research spree.
After checking reviews on some brands like Estee Lauder, Lancome and others, I found something that sparked my interest.
I came across a new brand called Rumi Cosmetiques. And their products seemed like a great fit for me because of a simple but remarkable fact:
All of their products are designed for women over 50.
After checking their website and browsing their products, I made a decision to try their VolumeCare+ Mascara & LashCare+ Eyelash Serum. As they call it, the Lash Duo Set.
They seemed to check all of the boxes:
- Formulated for sparse & thin eyelashes
- Suitable for sensitive eyes
- Contain a powerful blend of peptides to combat thinning lashes
- Water-resistant & transfer-proof mascara (a must for droopy eyelids)
All of their products come with a satisfaction guarantee, so I figured I had nothing to lose. (Also they are a small, family-owned business which I always have enjoyed supporting)

The shopping experience already made me feel I was up to something great: their owner Kate personally reached out to thank me and we had a really nice discussion. (As I understood, they do their best to get in touch and thank every one of their customers)
The order also arrived in a swift manner.
After receiving it, I went to try their mascara straight away.
After putting on the first coat, I was blown away by the results. And when I say blown away, I actually mean it.
It was super light & glided on like a dream. I usually like to apply multiple coats but with this mascara one is enough.
Throughout the day it didn't smudge, flake nor smear. And at the end of the day it was super easy to remove which is great for our eyelashes.
A big plus are the active ingredients inside the mascara formula. As I understand, they make our natural eyelashes grow while the mascara is applied.
That same evening I also applied LashCare+ Serum before going to bed. And after applying it for 4 weeks, I see massive difference with my eyelashes even when I have no mascara on.
All in all, Lash Duo Set had exceeded my expectations. Not only they helped to revive my thinning eyelashes but also helped to reduce the appearance of my droopy eyelids & hooded eyes!
I can honestly say Rumi Cosmetiques is one of those rare brands whose products actually do what it says.
And after many years, I can say I'm in love with how my eyes look. Even my husband has complimented my eyes which he has never done!
So if you are looking for ways to reduce the appearance of hooded eyes and droopy eyelids, I highly suggest checking out their products!
